About the Event
Sonya Schumacher, who is a ceramics teacher in the L.U.S.D., will lead this class. Previous to becoming a full-time art teacher, she also did work as an artist in residence in schools.
This is a great chance to do a hands-on activity, something tactile. We are in a pandemic so it is hard to reach out and touch things these days. The teens will be socially distanced at outdoor tables to build a sea creature pinch pot sculpture in clay. The first hour they will learn how to form pinch pots and combine them into an "egg" shape. The second hour teens will add the sculptural parts to make a "creature" and add lots of amazing textures (like the wonderful textures we find in a coral reef, on sea turtles, or tropical fish). The last 30 minutes teens will add colored underglaze to accent the "creature". After the class, Sonia will take the pots back to her studio to fire, then dip in clear glaze. Arrangements will be made for students to pick them up safely by appointment after they have been glaze fired.(approximately 2 and a half weeks later.
